The good: Dubstep oldheads will recognise the Rusko brand for the aggressive sound he brought to dubstep that eventually proved to play a key part in the revolutionizing of the genre. But he's moved onto drum n bass, and he joins forces with Monstercat to put out an EP in that very genre. So let's talk drum n bass. "1 MAN ARMY" hosts some super fun leads, super fun sampling and energetic production to match. That's it, really; this EP is just a bunch of fun. Rusko goes for a very simple, yet very effective sound that revolves around the musical streamlining the leads provided, using them as an anchor for which to stack energy behind and build on each individual track with squeaky clean sampling and smooth production — finding beauty in simplicity.
The bad: This EP can sometimes feel like it isn't doing too much, and that might be a byproduct of its simplicity, but at times it feels like there isn't enough dynamicism to be engaging.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
1 Man Army | Very weird muffled sampling that honestly sounds kind of funny, DnB production is solid but not too standout | Fun |
Wassup | Banger tune with great sampling and clean DnB drops with a crazy lead and plenty of hard-hitting sections | Intense |
Rubix Cube | More laid-back tune with a lovely lead melody and very mature, withdrawn production | Laid-back |
Bout Your Love | Absolutely love the lead on this one, tons of fun and with great sound design and a lot of punch to match | Standout |
GANJAMAN | Another great lead, with more fun sampling and clean sound design — just a really clean tune overall | Fun |
