Beginner-friendly? probably not
As wobbly leads continue to wreak havoc over the dubstep scene of today, underground producer Keota embraces a more minimal, simple approach to the trope, one less focused on big festival performances.
The good: "1000 Answers" is, all things considered, a pretty creative little project. We've seen freeform bass on the main stage relentlessly, but a more reserved take like this is honestly pretty refreshing, and it allows Keota to adopt a more funky, wonky approach to the lead, pairing it with emptier mixing and some nifty sampling. And, the liquid drum n bass closing track "Chad The Lonely Junglist" feels like an aptly happy way to close off this EP.
The bad: I'm not too sold on the mixing here, where the leads are emphasised so much they hurt a little, feeling quite compressed. The empty atmospheres help, but they don't fully alleviate it. With some technical adjustments, "1000 Answers" could go a long way, though.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Silk | Nice laid-back intro with some neat sampling and a very wobbly, compressed bassline in the drop, but the mix is not great | Standout |
Neutron Style | Pretty funky with a big trap sub in the back, otherwise a fairly empty mix where the lead feels a little too squeezed and a bit annoying | Fun |
Gusano | More funk, more wobbly basslines, and more compressed leads — back half goes pretty hard but not enough | Intense |
LHTS | This one actually feels funky without feeling irritating or painful in some manner, sampling is pretty sweet too | Standout |
Chad the Lonely Junglist | Cute little liquid drum n bass to finish, the vocal is a nice addition and all the effects feel tasteful | Switchup |
