Square 4 riddim has been, especially in the modern scene, been a little hit or miss, and though Hamdi is one of the most acclaimed artists in the style, "Abomination" doesn't quite do it for me.
The good: Hamdi's garage influences are still strong to this day — perhaps most prominently in the closer "Move On", a tune which also happens to be my favourite.
The bad: Most of the actual riddim isn't quite up my alley. It's definitely got a nice UK flavour to it, one I can't fault it for having, and one that I do respect — but one that I just don't gel with. Paired with the slightly overblown sampling, and most of the brasher cuts off "Abomination" are a little irritating.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Lamp | Big fan of the Arabic aesthetics of the offdrops, but the lead bassline is a little too monotone and potent for my liking | Intense |
Abomination | In contrast to the previous track, this one is a little wacky for me and the volumes are a little all over the place | Intense |
Orchid | I actually really like the bassline work here, feels appropriately wubby and minimal, but the sampling is really annoying | Standout |
Ride Up To The Door | Sampling is a little iffy here, don't mind the four-on-the-floor switchup as it's refreshing but not really up my alley | Switchup |
Move On | Simple little future garage tune to finish, got the echoey vocal sampling and a nice atmosphere to match | Atmospheric |
