Beginner-friendly? definitely experimental but still reasonable
Somewhere in the distant, glassy future lies Iglooghost, smothered in primordial waste and post-apocalyptic landscapes, transmitting bizarre tunes from his job as a crane worker.
The good: Angsty, malicious beats seem uncannily fit for the more melodic approach "Bronze Claw Iso" has to its vocals, especially when compared to its older brother project "Tidal Memory Exo". Iglooghost maintains the same production wizardry, and most of the same stylistic elements, for a wondrous yet gritty 5-track journey through this primitive wasteland he paints once again. Intense grime-leaning cuts like "Xcavator.03" burst through the filth in a wave of character, while more ethereal cuts like "Mouthbreath-r" float haphazardly above it - but whichever style you prefer (and I love them both), every track from here is undeniably creative and refreshingly raw, with even a bit of spontaneous humour sprinkled in places. But what brings this an extra step up is the lyricism - every tune brings a cohesively built, clever mini-narrative that adds to the character of this whole EP.
The bad: Not much intrinsically wrong with this project. Perhaps it lacks some of the relentless pounding that "Tidal Memory Exo" had, but it's replaced by some more atmospheric sensibility and melodic quality. The only nitpick I have is that the intro track is a little too random, and some of the synth hits are a little tired compared to the rest of the project, but there aren't any flaws substantial to outweigh the originality, the character, that Iglooghost once again imposes.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Bronze Claw Iso | Intro track where they're essentially saying random phrases, sounds kind of insane but also very disorienting | Structural |
Xcavator.03 | Powerful, stabby production that drives the track straight forward, helped a lot by the almost melodic grime performance | Intense |
Mouthbreath-r | Atmospheric cut with more of a focus on melody and the vocal effects, with strong songwriting and a distinct sonic signature | Atmospheric |
Slug Song | Glitchy drum n bass track that thrives on its flow, but still has some really sweet sound design to back it up | Switchup |
Metal Newt | Strong, meaty synth hits, with a sick dynamic soundscape and some well-crafted lyricism - strong finisher | Melodic |
