Beginner-friendly? yes!
It's been a while since I've heard a quirky little melodic project like this one, and, though it's a bit of a mixed bag, "Cyberline" executes itself pretty well.
The good: Astrale's niche is just that — niche. No added grandeur, no big sweeping atmospheres or immersive audio experiences, none of that funny business. Just Astrale and his (very good) voice, singing and editing over some pretty quality electronic beats. But, with that being said, "Cyberline" maintains a consistent tone all throughout — helped in part by its continuous nature, but also by simply holding consistency in production style. It's something that's important for any EP, but "Cyberline" isn't restricted by it, and it leaves Astrale free to experiment with house, trap, breaks, and ambient, all whilst targeting the same niche.
The bad: I think there were simply a few more misses than I had initially expected. "Cyberline" is still a strong EP, but a couple of tracks in the middle didn't quite click with me, so it doesn't quite receive that extra rating level in the lack of a star-studded tracklist.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Coriolis | Feels like a well-done ambient intro that progresses nicely into the next track, does its job well | Structural |
Cyberline | Clean house track with some nice internet-y lyricism, the synthwork is great and the vocal really helps it along | Upbeat |
Letting Go | Vocal is a bit repetitive and the progression doesn't quite do enough for the 4 minute runtime, especially with the vocal chop | Laid-back |
Waiting For a Sign | Astrale's vocal is particularly strong here but the trap-leaning production doesn't quite match it; ending is good though | |
The Way I See | Another house cut, and this one is very strong with a catchy hook and very engaged production — love this one | Catchy |
Clean | Love the bassier approach to this one, liquid breakbeat is super cool and complemented by the vocal nicely | Standout |
Disconnect | Whirring ambient tune to finish off, plays well with the piano and surrounding instrumentation — sound design is also sick at the end | Structural |
