Cyclops drops a meaty 7-track EP out of nowhere that takes ganders into everything the modern festival bass scene has to offer, in what could easily be a new direction for him.
The good: Packed with wobbly freeform bass leads and Cyclops' trademark riddim punch, "EYE SPY" rides modern dubstep trends in a manner that feels tropey, but also somewhat refreshing. Largely, it's because it does feel like Cyclops has put care into this tracklist, giving it a relatively long runtime (for an EP), with dollops of creative songwriting and stoned humour.
The bad: I can hear Cyclops' sound on this, but I don't really feel like it's put to work sufficiently for "EYE SPY" to feel distinctly Cyclops. That might just be because it gets lost amidst all the wobble, but much of this EP feels a little homogenous and lacking that special flair.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
SPY | The melodies are honestly pretty great and the sampling holds up too, but the first two drops kind of suck | Heavy |
STINK SERENADE | Nice transition and I much prefer the wobblier vibe this track has, with less crushing bass emphasis | Intense |
BLUNT SONG | Some silly vocal samples and a deep, wobbly freeform bassline, doesn't do a whole lot and is short but fun | Fun |
NOISE COMPLAINT | The signature Cyclops sound is more detectable here, but it's still pretty wobbly and hard-hitting | Standout |
WOMP WORLD | Got a lot of punch here, big fan of the breakdowns and offdrops but the drops do feel a little derivative | Heavy |
CHOKESLAM | Very heavy juddering bass house tune with a nice trap switchup midway through; very creative for this EP | Standout |
WICKED | The bitty lead is alright, this finale doesn't really bring anything to the EP that it already did though | Intense |
