Beginner-friendly? yes, except "Heat"
Au5 will never cease to innovate in the electronic space, and this "Earthwave" EP has only increased my respect for him as a producer.
The good: Joining forces with Psyuri and her unwaveringly consistent vocal, "Earthwave" is, as an experience, basically flawless in all its technical aspects. Pristine sound design and sweeping atmospheres from Au5 back Psyuri's floaty, almost ethereal vocal performances, and "Earthwave" ends up being more of a holistic experience rather than a set of 5 tracks.
The bad: I wish we saw more of Au5's production mastery in this EP. I appreciate that he's a little more withdrawn by design, but it just feels a little too withdrawn. Don't let the seemingly low number of adds (70+/100 rated tracks) fool you though — "Earthwave" isn't poor on a track-by-track basis by any means, it simply lacks replayability.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Paradigm | Psyuri's vocal drifts across the soundscape and Au5 explodes onto it with his own melodic production — a bit long, but quality | Melodic |
Adrift | Simplistic, atmospheric production, sound design is immaculate but the piano is a little meh and I wish Au5 had more of a stake in it | Atmospheric |
Heat | Pretty sick heavier tune, Psyuri's vocal is fantastic and the house switchup at the end is very tasteful | Heavy |
Of My Soul | Au5's production feels very withdrawn and ambient, and whilst Psyuri's vocal is good, this track does drag on a little | Laid-back |
Muted | Love this atmosphere, it doesn't really stand up outside the EP but, as an EP closer, it works fantastically | Atmospheric |
