Rocketman is a well known figure in the Monstercat community — not as an artist, but still integrated into the 'family', having hosted their radio show Call Of The Wild — but he's finally buckled down and dropped an EP on that very label.

The good: "From a Certain Point of View" is a just really well-made EP. The songwriting across the EP is quality, bring elements from both the modern scene and the nostalgic scenes of old and combining them into these 7 tracks. Across the board, "From a Certain Point of View" holds up as a holistic product, too, being cohesive enough to incorporate transitions between tracks, supplementing the feeling of following a 'certain point of view' through its logically fluctuating mood.

The bad: Melodic bass is, as a genre, a little hit or miss for me. And whilst "From a Certain Point of View" manages to avoid a lot of the tropes in the modern scene, it doesn't quite get to jump into breathtaking territory either, particularly in the more technical sound design corners. The mixdowns do feel a little cluttered as well, but I really don't mind that here, since it's (over)compensated before by the tracks mixing so well together..

Name Comments Superlative
hey... Really simple, really short telephone-call intro — feels aptly emotive but doesn't overstay its welcome Structural
Break Quite a powerful melodic bass track, got some creative sound design and actually pretty gut-wrenching melody work Emotive
Let Go A bit of a bassier mix for this stutter house tune, still has some quality melodies though — solid track Melodic
Moonlight Love the song's composition and the use of tension, especially in the second half, it holds a lot of power Standout
Waning A very warm melodic bass track, there's some level of progression but nothing too crazy really Melodic
[can't] Sleep Definitely recognise this sample, both the melodic bass and the drum n bass drops are pretty solid Upbeat
Slow Down Buttery smooth liquid drum n bass track, doesn't do much but it's a pretty appropriate finisher Laid-back
