GRiZ is back to bring us more band kid bass music. Whether it's ripping another solo on the saxophone, or ripping off a couple of wobbly basslines, "GEMiNI" is feel-good and vibey.
The good: Deep freeform bass and swaggering funk is a combination that's proved time and time again to be GRiZ's forte, and he's back to do it again with his "GEMiNI" EP. And with some swanky saxophone solos and wobbly dubstep basslines, it really does look difficult to stop him. This is not only a feel-good EP, but also one with the creativity and technical mastery to match.
The bad: Mainly "2-step Nassau", as though it's not a bad track in its own right, it does offset the rest of the EP a little. And, to extrapolate off of that, some of the freeform-bass-leaning concepts — particularly the array of basslines GRiZ employs — don't quite hit the mark at points.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Found Your Love | Fun vocal sample and bouncy melodic production with some great basswork and a killer saxophone | Melodic |
Take Me Home | Grabbitz's vocal is good as ever, the growly freeform bass feels held back a little by the builds but still a strong tune | Intense |
2-step Nassau | Feels a little weaker, carefree wobbly freeform bass but the main sample is a little irritating — final fakeout is pretty wild though | Fun |
Til The Color Fades | A little more reserved bass-wise, sampling is solid and the production is well-polished with lots of different movements | Standout |
