Beginner-friendly? nope
Many would call this EP the forefront of yet another dubstep revolution, but I don't think we're there just yet.
The good: "Grill" has all the makings of a groundbreaking modern dubstep EP. With a more minimal take and scattered garage influences, Casey Club pair original dubstep motifs with the overarching tropes of a growing freeform bass movement, that encourages a revitalization of the wobbly lead basslines splayed all over this four-track record.
The bad: It's simply just the style of beatmaking here that doesn't quite do it for me. Sure, it's creative, and sure, the production is well done, but the actively minimalist mixes don't really pair well with the more maximalist lead sounds, and the sound design feels like it's being held down by tropes that aren't quite brought together well enough to let it fly. This new wobblier, minimalistic style of dubstep that is slowly (re)emerging into more mainstream channels is very promising, but I don't personally think "Grill" is a spearheader for it.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Grill | Not a fan of the sound design on this, feels like it's trying to be maximalist with a very minimal nature | Intense |
White Claw Wobbler | Pretty creative track, I've never really been sold on this style of sound design but it's a fune tune nonetheless | Fun |
Steph | Very wobbly and the production is well-layered and structured nice and minimally, enjoying this one | Standout |
Brostep Flow | The flow on this is, aptly, pretty great, and though I don't care for the style the flow does carry it a long way | Intense |
