Henka - Devath

Rarely does a riddim EP hold a true musical connection to the listener, not just through having the hardest drops or the most impressive sound design, but through being sheerly beautiful music.

The good: That's what Devath's "Henka" EP is: a collection of punchy future riddim tracks with a careful attention to atmosphere. Devath exhibits awe-inspiring control over his production work, brimming with colour that begs to be released but is never allowed to, instead providing a backdrop to the addictive flows of the project and occassionally interjecting with an explosion or two. "Henka" channels that colour into its very musical spirit, and it does so with great success.

The bad: "Immortal" is definitely the ugly duckling of "Henka", for its outward-facing heaviness without as much attention to detail. Sitting slap bang in the middle of the tracklist, it does bring the tracks around it down a fair bit (update after a few days: I kind of dig it now, enough for me to save it because it goes pretty hard, but I do still think it detracts from the cohesiveness).
