Beginner-friendly? it's 50/50

Oliverse may be a very well-respected figure in the bass music scene, but I'm a little skeptical about his debut Monstercat EP.

The good: "Illusions" does have some nice production on it. Accomodating an alternation of heavier dubstep and dancefloor drum n bass, Oliverse exhibits pretty on-par production with some nifty ideas to match, with plenty of strong vocals, drops, and replayability.

The bad: I don't really gel with a lot of the ideas here. Whether it's the shouty vocal of ILLAMAN on "Wake Up", the rough bass mixdown on "Close to me", or the two tamer dancefloor DnB tracks, it doesn't feel like Oliverse nailed the range of concepts he could have explored within these four tracks. "Illusions", as an EP, feels a little one-dimensional.

Name Comments Superlative
Wake Up These drops are absolutely sick, punchy and impactful; acidic builds are neat as well even if the vocal is a bit iffy Heavy
Rendezvous Nina Sung's vocal is great and the dancefloor lead is nice, most of the track is a little bland but cool nonetheless Standout
Close to me The bassy lead is a bit too coarsely mixed for me, the flow is nice though and incorporates the sample well Heavy
Avalanche Bertie Scott puts in a very nice vocal performance and the dancefloor DnB lead is nice and airy, but a little bland again
