The good: Skybreak's breakthrough EP into the colour bass scene is everything it's cracked up to be. Intertwined with a nice narrative, Skybreak brings forth a couple of good features and vocal performances to bolster his cohesive idea across these five tracks. But honestly, somehow, the production overpowers it. Skybreak unleashes a flurry of innovative and incredibly hard-hitting ideas, utterly colourful and brilliantly impactful, whether that be the bass-infused first drop of "Journey's End" or the liquidy feel to "Cryolite", showing us why he's now such a respected figure in the scene. "Moonglow" is surely one of the best EPs in the genre, and one of the most prominent EPs for modern dubstep as a whole.
The bad: Not really much to put here. The energetic production can sometimes detract from the cohesive aspect of this record, and sometimes the chunky snares can be a little too chunky, but there's no major flaws I feel the need to point out.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Moonglow | Stabby, strong, explosive, and intense — absolute banger of a future riddim tune to kick off this EP | Intense |
Soul Shards | DNAKM's vocal is solid and the drops are incredibly well-made, colourful and hard-hitting and punchy | Standout |
Cryolite | Loved the vocal and the wistful lyricism, and the liquidy drops are fantastic and pair well with the chopping | Emotive |
Crystal Heart | Thoroughly enjoyed this lead, track has great flow with a big snare — honestly the punch sells it to me | Melodic |
Journey's End | Probably the strongest vocal performance on the EP, not huge on the spoken-word but the drops are sick | Standout |
