Beginner-friendly? maybe?
Considered as one of the founding fathers of modern dubstep Caspa's stuck to his roots over the years, and now he's bringing 5 different collaborators to the sounds of his deep UK wubs — the result is pretty much as expected.
The good: Each of these collaborators do bring something distinct to this tracklist, with the likes of PEEKABOO and Ternion Sound adding their well-respected styles to Caspa's UK sound. But the overarching style remains rather decidedly deep and wubby, true to Caspa's own craft; the bridge between modern UK dubstep and old-school UK dubstep has been formed. This EP really works because it sets up a minimalist, sure-of-self mood, and sticks to it with vigour.
The bad: "Project X" does feel like it tees off a little towards the end, with those final tracks feeling perhaps a little too similar to the ones before them, yet also a little weaker, with reduced drive behind them. That being said, though, every track here nonetheless brings something valuable.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Gut Feeling | Keeping the deeper wubby lead constantwas a good choice here, but these two do switch the sound design up a lot | Standout |
Affinity | Flow is great on this one with the sampling and more melodic soundscape, but still with the deep wubs | Melodic |
Never Serious | Super deep flow and some brilliant dynamicism, both in flow and sound design switches, mixed on the percussion but it's creative | Intense |
No Laughing Matter | Wubs are particularly prominent here, a little bit less melodic and more distorted, and a little more minimal | Dark |
Real Talk | Not big on the compressed feeling of the lead here, but the flow is good enough for me to enjoy it | Intense |
