The good: I really wish I had more good to say about this. RZRKT (pronounced 'resurrect') turns up on Subsidia for his "Reborn" EP, and genre-wise, it's pretty standard for Subsidia's output. Most of the tracks have plenty of heavy impact and a couple of them are pretty gritty, and the melodic dubstep switchup in "You" was pretty nice. Trying to find his footing in the festival scene, RZRKT brings some neat atmospheric ideas, and most of the intros and breakdowns have some solid synths and dark motifs.
The bad: Welcome to sustain purgatory. "Reborn" presents itself as dark and violent, sure, but I'd prefer it if that violence wasn't directed at me as a listener. The loud sustains are ear obliterators and pierce through the briddim with anger, and it genuinely hurts. Far too many of the tracks devolve into firing as many obnoxious sustains as possible, lumping noise into the track to drown out all the other — honestly fairly interesting — ideas RZRKT employs, chopping any good musical choices down as soon as they arrive.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Eminent | Neat atmospheric intro and breakdown, and solid flow in the drops, but the weird sustains really annoy me | Standout |
Lesson | Very loud — loud sample, loud briddim, loud everything, with completely overblown abrasive drops | Heavy |
Disrupt | Actually solid offdrops and sampling, but the drops, once again, feel derivative and injected with painful sustains | Heavy |
Madness | I mean, to my ears, this track literally sounds the same as the ones before it — similar loud briddim stuff | Heavy |
You | Vocal-driven, more melodic track with some neat synths and a longer runtime — surprised me, but enjoyed it | Switchup |
Reborn | Explosive finale with plenty of growl and grit, still falls into pitfalls of the other tracks but has impact | Standout |
