Beginner-friendly? no, i guess?

The good: It's very difficult to pick my favourite element off this EP, a toss-up between sound design and tonality. Of the former, VCTRE is skilled. Basswork, beatwork, synthwork, VCTRE has it all, and he arranges it in a slightly offbeat, slightly spacey, and very grimy manner, motoring the EP along with powerful basslines and clean synth lines. Of the latter, VCTRE attempts something very interesting. He combines a moody, distorted, withdrawn ambient sound with an intense bass flavouring, transcending track structure, and "Reciprocity" is almost beautiful, tinted with the violence it trudges through. Oh, and the length is great to have too, at 7 tracks and 26 minutes of length.

The bad: I'm not sure how to feel about some of these tunes. VCTRE goes experimental with sound design, but at times it feels as if he sacrifices rhythm and/or flow for it. I suspect "Reciprocity" will grow on me, but as of now, I don't think VCTRE has quite produced something with a polished enough finish to give it that extra edge.

Name Comments Superlative
Basket Case Ambient intro that moves into a distorted, punchy drop with a thick lead; like the tonality, not so much the execution Intense
Reciprocity Satisfying basses and a wiggly, strong lead with clean sound design — executes the tonality very nicely Standout
Up in the Joint Brash sample and some very deep basswork that persists through the entire track but feels quite stationary Intense
Reverse Naes Heavier and slammier, slightly abrasive and the mixdown juts out in parts but it kind of goes Heavy
Sound Eater Enjoyed the sound design on this one, even if the monotone lead isn't my thing the vibe is quite spacey and weird Standout
In my Head Chill liquid trap tune with a lovely withdrawn atmosphere, and the sampling complements it very well Laid-back
Crash Course Big distorted first movement that progresses to a cohesive drop with rap samplings — well-executed finale Intense
