Beginner-friendly? maybe if you like rap, idk, but probably not
The good: Virus Syndicate's vocal, is, to me, the obvious highlight. They've been a staple of rap in the heavier side of dubstep, featuring often on labels like Disciple (which "Resistance" was actually released on) and collaborating with basically everyone in the festival dubstep scene. For their EP "Resistance", they control the party, rapping with their signature dirty flow over all four tracks, and bringing on some big names like Whales or Ace Aura to supplement them. "Resistance" is a very consistent EP of heavy production and a dark twinge to the atmospheres, with intensity exhibited even by the more melodic "Level", and it's this consistency that helps it considerably.
The bad: Two out of four tracks are missing the trademark "it's Virus Syndicate... bleughhhhh" which is enough to warrant taking off several points in itself. I joke, of course, but still, some of the lyricism feels uninspired or bland. The worst offender here, however, is the production. Each track has some cool elements, sure, but despite the name power on this EP, all four tracks turn me away in one way or another, making sonic decisions I'm not too sold on.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Paradox | Long opener, enjoyed the dark atmosphere in the verses, but some of the drop choices are questionable and overblown | Heavy |
Level | Rap is spotlighted in the more minimal verses whilst the future riddim takes the reins for the drops | Switchup |
Came To Rage | Simple trap beat and a strong, almost fuzzy sub that continues throughout the track, backing a notable lead | Intense |
Asking For | Flow in the verses is nice, not huge on the piercing synths or the muddy briddim drops | Heavy |
