Beginner-friendly? if you like drum n bass
It's amazing how drum n bass, despite rigidly sticking to the same beat patterns and BPMs, is a genre that constantly pushes boundaries — and, this time, it's Azumai that takes up the mantle.
The good: "Rude Boi" is very creative in both ideas and execution. Azumai experiments with different ideas and styles for each track, everything from progressive, dark rollers to meaty neurofunk lead lines, and all framed by the same meticulously minimal style. This is a tracklist that captures everything the underground of this genre has to offer, and places them on a spread for all to enjoy — a banquet, if you will, of drum and bass.
The bad: Not really much to put here, considering this EP is just so solid. Maybe some of the tracks lack dynamicism in of themselves, but I honestly don't mind it.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Brainer Gainer | Sound design is on point here, the meatier rolling neurofunk works well with the shifting, mechanical drums | Intense |
Phyllody | Melodies interact here in a really cool way, in both the offdrops and the drops, and the second drop is filthy | Standout |
Right On Time | Sci-fi-influenced, synthwave-esque offdrops and some nasty bass runs in the drops; cohesive tune | Intense |
Rude Boi | Hold on?! The creativity?! The minimalism?! The absolutely brilliant progression on this drum n bass roller?! | Standout |
Simono | Love the more liquid drum n bass take on this finisher, great wonky lead and a pretty minimal atmosphere | Atmospheric |
