Beginner-friendly? nope
The underground sounds of rave culture have always belonged to their own story, built upon the personal stories of the ravers themselves. Someone was bound to make a journalistic EP on it, and Blooom is the one to try his hand.
The good: Jump up DnB is one of the harder-hitting genres in the bass scene for its big sustains and ripping basslines. What this EP does well is provide a set of quintessential jump up tunes that would feel perfectly at home in a rave - which, I suppose, is exactly what it would want to achieve.
The bad: Despite its journalistic intents, "STORIES FROM THE RAVE" lacks ambition in its execution. Blooom doesn't attempt to provide anything past simple jump up, and even with a couple of interesting sections thrown into the mix, this EP fails to actually breach any boundaries despite its bold branding claim of giving a meta commentary on rave culture.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
THE CULTURE | Journalistic, enveloping intro pushing the idea of rave culture - I like the concept, not musical but good for cohesiveness | Structural |
THE WAY I ROLL | Don't mind the growly, fast-paced jump up drops, but I'm not big on the vocal and the sustain is a bit tiring | Intense |
TAKE ME BACK | Pretty simple DnB cut with powerful basslines, sampling is cool but a little repetitive - solid tune | Intense |
PURPOSE | Maksim MC's verses are neat and the neuro-esque drops push through hard, but it does feel a little flat | Standout |
IS IT | A tune that's written quite well in terms of composition, but production-wise doesn't quite come together | Intense |
BREATHE | I always found this style of lead a little unsettling, pretty cool but fails to expand upon itself sufficiently | Intense |
