Beginner-friendly? i guess so, yeah
The good: Somehow "Someone You Can Count On" is tonally bizarre like no EP I've heard before: so bland, yet so unique; so emotive, yet so monotonous; so many similar sonic qualities, yet so much diversity; and all in the same 7-song project — reasonably long for an EP. WHIPPED CREAM proves why she's such a potent up-and-coming force in the scene with dark, emo-styled songwriting, whether that's the bassline-driven production or the melancholic vocals (often of WHIPPED CREAM's own). The genre diversity is also felt, ranging from trap to halftime to midtempo, and yet it's all permeated with similar sonic motifs like strong sub-basses and similar synths, helping the mood a lot.
The bad: WHIPPED CREAM sets a high bar at the start of the record with the innovative "The Dark", but after that, she digs a hole for herself and never really gets out, leaving "Someone You Can Count On" as rather repetitive and slightly bland. There's a good project in here somewhere, but it's lost amidst the melodramatic emo themeing.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
The Dark | Hard-hitting, majestic basses, backing a unique opera vocal that facilitates quite a grand, expansive atmosphere | Standout |
Angels | Not huge on the vocal here; the production is slow and has some nice synths, though it lacks polish | Emotive |
Be Here (La La La) | Banging midtempo with a progressive feel to it, a simplistic vocal, and a choral second movement | Intense |
CRY | Kind of bland vocal sample that gets old pretty fast, but the production is decent enough | Dark |
Rewind.. (But I Love You) | The vocal chop is very enjoyable, alongside the big bassy sound design throughout the track | Standout |
Friends | Mildly depressing vocals and lyricism with a nice melodic future bass drop backed by rolling subs | Melodic |
Someone You Can Count On | Pretty cool vocal chops and matching vocals, with minimal yet powerful production; honestly a really strong outro | Structural |
