The good: Sometimes just going for the most belligerent deliverance of bass is the right way to go, and that's kind of what MIDNIGHT CVLT embraces in his semi-eponymous "THE CVLT" EP. Released on acclaimed neurofunk label Eatbrain, a level of expectation is already set for the record, and yet it slaps that expectation right across the face. In terms of production value, "THE CVLT" is absolutely face-slamming and brain-melting and any other adjective you would associate (and expect) in contemporary neurofunk, and MIDNIGHT CVLT does a fantastic job of compacting as much pure heat as he could into this. Whilst I prefer his solo tracks over the two collab tracks, there's some damn good stuff here.
The bad: The cohesiveness. Mainly, the project branding let me down a lot, because from that cover art and project titling, I was expecting "THE CVLT" to have a consistent atmosphere at the very least, but MIDNIGHT CVLT is apparantely having none of that with energetic yet seemingly unrelated sampling and not many tracks appealing to the dark vibe of the cover art other than, in part, "Collision".
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Beware Of The Drop | Absolutely slaps; complex, harsh and hard-hitting neurofunk with consistent sampling and all-out production | Heavy |
Up! | Love the lead on this one that gives the track stability, but this just goes, completely nuts track with a neat techno switch | Standout |
Numba One | Not huge on the lead nor the sampling, but it's still a very solid track with a nice vibe to it | Intense |
Collision | Getting a slightly eerie feel from this one, with some neat sound design and lots of impact | Dark |
