Beginner-friendly? maybe?
Josh Teed's second EP of the year is a followup to his "Prologue" EP, and it continues the same fantasy and UK dubstep tropes well, but it also just feels a bit weaker.
The good: That's not to say this production is bad by any means. The basslines are deep, the stabs hit hard, and all the orchestral fantastical elements see sufficient expansion to keep Josh Teed's world going. I have to commend him for what is shaping up to be a journey of epic proportions, because the roots of this story seem equal parts grimy and expansive.
The bad: Nothing in "The Rise of Mycaria" really jumps out as different from the previous "Prologue" EP. Josh Teed largely just plays with very similar production tropes with a little bit of a darker tint to the atmospheres, and these tracks still feel less dynamic than those in "Prologue". Again, that definitely doesn't make this EP bad by any means, but at just three tracks long, any flaw is bound to hurt it significantly.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
From The Ashes | An obvious continuation from "Prologue" with the same orchestral elements and deep basslines, and a sick final drop | Atmospheric |
Subterfuge | Darker mix of strings and basslines, the wubbier leads are nice but the monotone trap-leaning parts are a bit iffy | Dark |
Nightfall | Big fan of these bass stabs and the flute elements, there's this one bass I don't like but everything else is cool | Standout |
