Music industry heavyweights Flume and JPEGMAFIA join forces to push the boundaries of their respective genres to never-seen-before levels, in perhaps the goofiest mainstream project they could have possibly created.
The good: Whilst Peggy's rapping takes a little bit of a backseat, the verses we do get from him are well-done, and (aside from "Track 1") Flume cooks up some very nice melodic beats to complement the vocals and occasionally take the spotlight for themselves — and, for all intensive purposes, coming into this project as a more Flume-leaning fan, I definitely did enjoy his eccentric beatmaking. And all the while, the topics "We Live In A Society" discusses are surprisingly meta and the lyricism is, for the most part, targeted with intent.
The bad: Whilst it's very creative, "We Live In A Society" is not something I'd come back to often. It simply lacks replayability value in a way that hurts the EP, and whether that's in the quirky lyricism, the memey stylistics, or the ever-so-slightly harsh mixing, I'm unsure.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Track 1 | This song is so intentionally bad it makes fun of itself for 6 minutes straight, and I love it for that — ending bangs too | Fun |
Is It Real | Slower, more impactful production with some sparkly synths, JPEGMAFIA's hook is strong as well | Melodic |
AI Girlfriend | The stabby production is sick, with a well-made commentary on AI and the loneliness epidemic, but not huge on the vocal stylistically | Standout |
The Ocean Is Fake | JPEGMAFIA's vocal is muffled and the diluted garagey production takes a precedence, with a fuller rap in the final part | Laid-back |
