The good: SNAILS has established his brand of what he calls 'vomistep' in the modern heavy dubstep scene, and the sound design is definitely unique, and honestly quite enjoyable. Some of this stuff is indeed pretty nasty, grimy, or whatever other similar adjective you want to apply — SNAILS is no stranger to crushing dubstep drops and powerful briddim. The collaborator list is incredibly stacked, featuring the likes of Kompany, Kill The Noise and Subtronics, and yet you can always hear SNAILS' distinctive vomitstep sound pushing through the mix to deliver a slimy load of bass.
The bad: What I find problems with the most is the attitude of the holistic project. "World of Slime" doesn't feel like it warrants being an EP at all to me, ultimately boiling down to a bunch of purely festival tracks that seem to serve no other purpose. Very little care is given to the actual structuring of the tracklist, and SNAILS opts for a disgruntled heap of tunes that would probably go off at a rave but not quite at home. Whilst I have nothing inherently against that idea, "World of Slime" feels disingenuous as a result.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Grime Rate | Brash sampling and some insanely grimy drops that explode onto the soundstage — insane tune | Heavy |
Front 2 Back | Crowd control vocals explicitly styled for a festival — not huge on that, but the drops and screamo bang, as does the bass house switch | Intense |
System Overload | Sick rap performance from Virus Syndicate pairs well with signature sounds from both SNAILS and Kompany | Standout |
RKO | Weird but promisingly bright synths in the intro moves into serviceable rap and alright dubstep drops | Intense |
Tear It Up | Another simplistic vocal choice, this one much more bland, and the drops do lack impact | |
SNAILCLOPS | Bizarre vocal sampling but the drops are impactful and punchy, even if they are a bit repetitive | Standout |
Jackhammer | Enjoyed the big, imposing intro but the drops feel overly abrasive and screechy, track loses itself a bit | Heavy |
Snailephant VIP | Passable attempt at lore and atmosphere; growly drops have lots of impact but don't do it for me | Heavy |
