Beginner-friendly? probably not but don't take my word for it
The good: The world of freeform bass is currently in the process of exploding onto the scene, and AHEE, with this EP, tries to establish himself at the forefront of the movement. Indeed, in "Wubcraft", you'll find some wubs, and some crafty sound design, with some of the notably genre-defying basswork freeform bass has become associated with. AHEE wields his basslines, and he wields them well, over some nifty sampling.
The bad: Unfortunately, both his basswork and sampling on "Wubcraft" end up being a little hit or miss. At times it feels like the basswork doesn't do enough, and at others, it feels like the sampling does too much — and with that sampling being so rave-centric (as, I supposed, freeform bass seems to hold the trope of doing), "Wubcraft" can feel a little half-baked or otherwise disingenuous.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Wubcraft | Minimal bassline with a very clear idea — wobble. Simple sound design, and the sampling helps a lot | Standout |
Wizard Womp | The acidic wubs are neat but the sampling mostly just annoys me and the production doesn't quite compensate | Upbeat |
Night Vibes | This one oscillates like anything, sampling is alright but the production sells this one for me — bit short though | Fun |
Oxygen | Not big on the vocal, some parts of the drop are pretty rich but other parts aren't my thing | Intense |
