Butterfly Effect (Deluxe) - Koven

Alright, the original "Butterfly Effect" was kind of boring, but it definitely had that trademark Koven charm to it. It's up to these remixers to maintain that charm and make things more interesting. Some big names, some smaller names, some in-between-names, and all of these are definitely remixes. Except for the three bonus tracks. Those aren't remixes. Naturally. The four-track-run between "Numb" and "Good Enough" is very good, but other than that, I've gotta admit this was a little bit of a snoozefest of a comp.

  1. Give You Up - Franky Nuts Remix - The original was alright but Franky Nuts picks one of the best ideas from this entire comp to apply to this, and he does so in a very clean fashion. The lead is funky, the lead is wobbly, the lead zips around all over the place like a butterfly. The start is pretty unassuming, but the first drop is wonderfully melodic and the second drop is a super satisfying house one. (84/100)

  2. Numb - The second bonus track, and I enjoy this one a lot more. The drops feel well-done and Katie's vocal carry a slow, gliding grandeur to them — I'm a fan of this one. It's not the most out-there track, but it's well-polished, it's emotive, and it's cleanly produced with some strong ideas. (76/100)

  3. Followers - A.M.C Remix - A.M.C maintain the grittiness of the original very nicely, shuffling over to neurofunk (as opposed to the dubstep original), and honestly, I dig it. It's not the most dynamic cut ever, but it's raw and hard-hitting, and that psytrance finale to boot is a very nice touch. (73/100)

  4. Good Enough - The third and final bonus track, and it kicks of with a country-esque guitar opening that morphs, somehow, into dancefloor DnB. I think what makes this stand out is that Max's production shines quite nicely, and it's not the most interesting track Koven's ever made, but I do like it. (70/100)

  5. Worlds Collide - Grafix Remix - Doesn't quite maintain the majestic, grand quality the original had, but a pretty nifty remix nonetheless with a perky guitar and a couple of big synth hits. It's definitely a nice track, but I think too many good qualities of the original were dropped for me to fully gel with it. (68/100)

  6. For Me - BCee Remix - Vibey liquid DnB remix, keeps toe to toe with the original — which was not the most interesting, but this withdrawn take is certainly better. Not a save, but I can appreciate this a lot. (67/100)

  7. Missing - ilan Bluestone Remix - Very creative intro, warped basses that work well with the vocal despite residing in a vastly different style from the original, and the trance drop is just as creative but not as engaging. (66/100)

  8. YES - Fox Stevenson Remix - Vocal chops are very tasteful and the drops hoist a very dense, compressed bassline, of which I'm not a big fan of. Kind of disappointed by this one, because I do love Fox and I do love the original "YES", but this remix is not for me. (63/100)

  9. Butterfly Effect - VIP - Whilst it hits harder, something about this remix feels a little disingenuous, in that it undermines the original's emotive value for something that appeals more to the dancefloors. Some nice synthwork in the verses, but the second drop is the exact same, hurrah. (54/100)

  10. Shut My Mouth - REAPER Remix - Of course, REAPER has to speed up what used to be dubstep to transform it into DnB/drumstep. His classic growly style feels a little too abrasive for "Shut My Mouth", though, and the lead is brash and hard-hitting but sticks out like a sore thumb, with not enough of the elements working well together. The DnB sections are, though, more appealing to me than the drumstep ones. (52/100)

  11. Light Up - Kicking off this comp with a bonus track is a thoughtful choice, and Katie's vocal is powerful as always, but, I mean, the production really doesn't add anything other than this stomping snare. Doesn't feel like a bonus, only a track. (51/100)

  12. Stars - Oliverse Remix - Not Oliverse's best work here, not after slowing the vocals down and incorporating a very dated old-school growly brostep drop. The original "Stars" was reasonably forward-thinking and polished, but I cannot say the same for either of those two qualities here. Despite that, though, it's not terrible, I suppose. (48/100)

  13. Your Pain - The Prototypes Remix - I really do like the heavier ideas, at least at the start of the drop, but it ends up being rather monotonous and almost... dated? The added vocal chops are dubious at best, and The Prototypes kept the screechy section — a section I really did not like — from the original. To be fair, the verses are improved upon — Katie's vocal comes out a little more — but these drops are just annoying and a little muddy. (46/100)
