It's easy to feel like synthwave is torn between feeling modern and feeling distinctly '80s styled. Whilst "The Lost Years" most assuredly sits in the latter, it's difficult to say whether this acts as a homage, a reimagining, a stylistic mimic, or something else entirely.

Purely based on the fact that this is one of the few records that can bring a wonky, almost experimental sound to shake the commercial airwaves, "Skin" is already a record of note.

AKOV has put in commendable work in solidifying his style over the years, but I can't say I'm sold on the screamo-oriented neuro one he brings to his "Dance With The Devil" album. Pair that with randomly discarding his bear branding, and you can see why I'm just generally a little disillusioned with this project.

Fluorescence [Freeform bass]

An act that's always been known for their live instrumentation, Big Gigantic turn to the dubstep halls of wobbly sustained basslines as they dive further into the bass music scene.

It's been 8 years since "Nightmare Street", but finally, we have the Teddy Killerz sophomore album, and this time, it feels like they're in full flow.

Aura Park [Melodic bass]

"Aura Park" sees Dabin once again tap into his vast reserves of emotion, and, once again, sees him channel it into the expansive melodic drops that continue to bring him success.

Ganja White Night flex their great muscles and spring together a monstrous collaborator list for another wobbly dubstep album, a nifty addition to their mammoth catalogue.

MACHINE [Darksynth, Cybersynth, Midtempo]

F.O.O.L

After building a solid reputation as a foundational member of the Monstercat roster, with over a decade of experience in the electronic game and a slew of fantastic EPs, F.O.O.L (standing for Fuck Our Ordinary Lives) finally steps up and delivers his debut, full-length album. Boy do I wish this was up to the standard of his EPs.

Blackout [Jump up, Hard techno]

Malaa (Alter Ego)

The second project of Malaa's double album is from a new face — the face of Malaa (Alter Ego) — and with it comes a new camo mask. Which would be great, if either album actually cared about the masks or the double album idea at all.

Split The Atom [Bass, Drum n bass]

Noisia

2010 proved to be a key year in shaping the modern electronic landscape, and Noisia spearheaded the charge with their debut album "Split The Atom" — the album that not only put Noisia slap bang in the middle of everyone's radar, but also one that was so far ahead of its time that you can hear its influences in modern tracks to this day.

The first project of Malaa's double album is from his own familiar mask-obfuscated face, but sometimes, familiarity is a vice in music.

Grime's evolution has been closely intertwined with bass music, and, in some ways, this collaborative album between illustrious grime rapper P Money and drum n bass producer Whiney is a testament to just how well these two genres work together.

Dustin Bates, lead singer of experimental rock band STARSET, brings his vocal talents and narrative prowess to his electronic side project MNQN (I shall call the album and the project both under the moniker MNQN, since they're basically the same anyway). 

I Am Legion [Grime, Halftime]

Noisia, Foreign Beggars

"I Am Legion" is the side project of revered bass music trio Noisia, teaming up with MCs Orifice Vulgatron (now known as PAV4N) and Metropolis from grime group Foreign Beggars to put out this collab record. And for all the name power on it, this project sure does deliver.

"Sprouted" is the latest addition to Ganja White Night's ever-expanding catalogue of albums, and the prominence of wobble bass in it continues.

Holonomy [Drum n bass, House, Halftime]

To put 20 tracks — 90 minutes — of runtime on any album is an ambitious choice, let alone your debut album. But Vorso's musical wizardry speaks for itself.

TRILOGY [Synthwave, Darksynth]

Carpenter Brut

A combination of his EPs "I", "II" and "III" (a trilogy of EPs, if you will), Carpenter Brut shows us why he's such a big force in the synthwave scene. His industry innovation is clear, but perhaps "TRILOGY" feels a little bloated.

Skellytn tries to make her mark on the drum n bass scene with a very dense debut record.

Hive Mind [Neuro breaks, Neurofunk]

Three producers, a penchant for blunt neurofunk, and a novel concept. Whilst it may not be the strongest record ever, "Hive Mind" posits something refreshingly new.

Heritage [Bass house]

As good as Habstrakt is at bass house, "Heritage" is a complete nothingburger of a record.

Introspection [French house]

"Introspection" was released in 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it seems reflective of much of the mood during quarantine period — the unspoken feelings we were all feeling.

Apashe's first explicitly classical-styled LP is stylistically as good as ever, but, in retrospect, it doesn't quite compare to much of his later stuff.

Provocative and stolidly anti-commercial, "The Ugly Art" adds yet another industrial project to Machine Girl's discography.

Nurture [Synthpop]

Porter Robinson

Porter Robinson's sophomore album is vastly different from what he's done before, and what he went on to do after, and it might just be the strongest of the lot.

Burial's critically acclaimed sophomore album still holds up to this day as one of the greatest electronic albums of all time.

Take the cover art and the album title at face value, because Gydra delivers pretty much exactly what they claim to deliver.

"Unicorn" is just a very synthwavey album. Gunship stick to their guns (pun intended), and they stick well.

An uncanny blend of destructive brostep and dancefloor drum n bass, Delta Heavy's "Only in Dreams" is constantly fighting itself about how it wants to sound. And even after that, it's still incredibly boring.

Soulfire: Insight [Complextro, Miscellaneous]

As part of his "Soulfire" series of albums, Auvic presents "Soulfire: Insight", a hybrid complextro album that tells fantastical tales about a hero's journey.

Polychrome [Neurohop, Glitch hop]

Pristine production, meticulous mixing, and a set of wonderfully groovy beats, the tracks of "Polychrome" are astronomically tough to beat.

"Tidal Memory Exo" is possibly one of the the most creative albums I've heard to date. And that is no small feat.

The two-sided debut album from breakout riddim producer beastboi suffers from the same overblown underground-dubstep stylistics that pushed him to prominence in the scene.

Divinorum [Melodic dubstep]

Many would consider this Au5's magnum opus, and I agree, because it does two things extremely well.

Russian neurofunk trio Teddy Killerz continue to push boundaries within the bass music scene, and I love to see them do that. What I don't love, however, is seeing them do it in the most disjointed fashion possible. 

I Contain Flashing Images [Electro House, Progressive house]

No Mana

Backed by an incredibly detailed pixel art cover, "I Contain Flashing Images" is one giant mood swing of electro house, progressive house, and techno.

CAGE SCRIPT [Future bass, Miscellaneous]

k?d's production talent finds ways to pierce through cloudy musical skies, and "CAGE SCRIPT" would be a fantastic debut album if it didn't sound a little fatigued.

WLUWD [Alternative electropop]

"WLUWD" is an instrument of emotion and evocation, of melancholy and grief, of hope and love.

The Third Kind [Dubstep]

Occassionally, the deep dark depths of underground dubstep will surface a truly incredible record. I think it's safe to say that, in that regard, Dyatic has stolen the metaphorical show.

HUMAN [Breakbeat, Trap]

Raw energy. Those are the only two words that can truly describe this album.

"Mechanomorphic" hosts a massive cover art, a massive 18 song tracklist, and a massive 20 distinctive collaborators.

This album is fun, colourful, and might implode your ears. Dubstep's just like that sometimes.
