Renaissance (Remixes) - Apashe

I don't expect this compilation to have the same level of orchestral control as Apashe's original "Renaissance" did — no one does it quite like Apashe — but I do hope the electronic sections in particular receive a lot of interesting different angles, especially considering that those were the weak points of the original. Spoiler alert: too much house, not enough angles. But don't let that detract from the actually creative remixes.

  1. Distance - KOAN Sound Remix - Fantastic remix from KOAN Sound, who bring their trademark basswork, sound design, and perfect mixdown to "Distance". The basswork is, in particular, absolutely phenomenal, the perfect balance between technical, smooth and hard-hitting, with some brilliant sound design on top of it, and a nice switch in the second half. Though, Geoffroy's vocal gets a little lost in the mix. (96/100)

  2. Work - SWARM Remix - SWARM takes the reins for the only "Work" remix on this compilation, smooshing it with a bunch of thick basslines and a lot of mainstage heavy dubstep tropes. It's still absolutely insane though, because the tropes are toyed with in a very clever way so as to not be too obnoxious, fitting well together. (90/100)

  3. Insane - Varien Remix - Hello??? What is this intro??? Slamming basses and TechN9ne is insanely fast now — in a good way — and Varien slicks everything up with a brainmelting intensity. It's short, it's sweet, it's super heavy and not digestible in the slightest, and I'm loving it. Mixed feelings on the final switch, but it's still sick. (88/100)

  4. Lord & Master - TYNAN Remix - Very creative remix with a lot of metallic, distorted sound design and powerful drops — a good showing from TYNAN. (84/100)

  5. Behind My Eyes - Clockvice Remix - Super powerful neurofunk remix, the slower rhythm of the vocal isn't as good as the original but Clockvice sure does make up for it, because these drops are straight gas. This is one hell of a remix. (82/100)

  6. Uebok - VIP - Apashe makes simple changes to the original, but the VIP feels a lot smoother and more complete, with coarser bass runs and a drum n bass finish. (81/100)

  7. Distance - Pushing Daizies Remix - This muted vocal effect is really weird, but it also works really well with the more melodic house take on the track, and the organic instrumentation adds a lot to the vibe. Final drop is chill trap, but it still fits very well. (80/100)

  8. I'm Fine - IMANU Remix - IMANU brings the vocal out really well here, and this is easily one of the better house cuts off this package. It's a little wibbly, a little fluttery, a little melodic. Doesn't need to be flashy, this is just super clean and super appealing. (78/100)

  9. Distance - Buunshin Remix - Buunshin does a really good job at mixing Geoffroy's vocals into his own buildups, and the neuro drops are strong and driving. An effortless blending of "Distance" with heavier drum n bass, though the orchestral elements are largely lost. (76/100)

  10. Behind My Eyes - Vanic Remix - Pretty massive drops with an abrasive twist to them, the mix on the vocal is a lot better and there's some really nice sound design; something about the flow of the first drop doesn't click with me, but everything else is squeaky clean and well-designed. (75/100)

  11. Insane - Kai Wachi Remix - Kai Wachi's renowned guitar stylistic punctuates TechN9ne's intro (the gravitas of his verses are infinitely better now), building into a crushing briddim first drop. Second drop is equally crushing and equally briddim, but the different angle is nice. Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. (74/100)

  12. Lord & Master - Gentlemens Club Remix - Gentlemens Club keeps it pretty true to the original, but he's switched the drops over into some addictive bass house with both the original bass and orchestral influences — strong, consistent remix. (73/100)

  13. Insane - BILLYTHEKID Remix - BILLYTHEKID stays true to the original and slowly starts piling his own changes onto it. Massive drops and a weird liquidy sound design style gradually envelops everything, but the sampling kind of gets on my nerves. Vomitsteppy and really bizarre, but I think I like this? (70/100)

  14. I'm Fine - OVERWERK Remix - Not as interesting as IMANU's remix, but this is a respectable track from OVERWERK — has some nice progression and does some cool stuff, but feels a little overshadowed by IMANU. Sorry, OVERWERK. (68/100)

  15. Uebok - Two Fingers Remix - Unique atmosphere that adds an extra layer to the original — a layer much appreciated, but not a layer that particularly goes anywhere. Would love if it had a bigger progression curve. (67/100)

  16. Distance - Volac Remix - Quirky little house remix from Volac, has some cool sound design and I like how the vocal has been brought out more, but it's got the same problem as the original: it just doesn't do enough. (64/100)

  17. Uebok - YMIR Remix - YMIR's production and vocal are as good as ever, very grand and dynamic, but I can't help but feel like he doesn't really fit the song. I wish he brought this same musical expertise to literally any other song on this album. (61/100)

  18. Legend - GEN.KLOUD Remix - Some of these basslines are very satisfying but GEN.KLOUD doesn't quite pull the track out of the hole it had dug itself into. Vocal chops are a creative addition, and it's a good effort, but not enough for me to wholly enjoy it. (60/100)

  19. Good News - Timour Leng Remix - Timour Leng cranks up the distorted bass to a good level in the verses, but then he cranks it up again for the drops — a bit too much, to the point where it loses itself. Buildups are sick, but they don't go anywhere. (58/100)

  20. Insane - BIJOU Remix - More house, hooray... It feels like a recurring theme that most of the house on this comp just doesn't interest me too much. This one has a nice flow — especially in the buildups — and some brain-tingling mixing, and BIJOU balances everything well, but nothing really stands out. (57/100)

  21. Uebok - Russian Jump Up Mafia Remix - Disappointed it was not jump up (alright, second drop is). Still a jumpy house tune though, so it passes. The house is mostly fine, not a particularly interesting angle to take an interesting original track, and the added vocal is kind of questionable. (56/100)

  22. Rain - Qrion Remix - Clean house remix that sacrifices some of the original's atmosphere for a more polished, technical finish. Feels nice, but pretty cold and distant, and KROY's vocal is a little muted, though the childish choruses are dealt with better. (56/100)

  23. Overture - Dylan Philips Cover - Cool piano cover, but piano covers were never really my thing. I appreciate the effort, but this one will not stick with me. (55/100)

  24. Good News - INHUMAN Remix - INHUMAN (aka Code: Pandorum) tries a bit of an offbeat house/techno remix, but it just doesn't feel like he put any interesting spin on it. Doesn't feel like an Apashe remix, nor does it feel like a Code: Pandorum track, just feels a little lost. (53/100)

  25. Good News - Matroda Remix - Pretty inoffensive house remix that does very little. Couple of nice moments, but this is mostly pretty derivative and a little unnecessary. Feels like fluff. (50/100)

  26. Dead - Martin Hørger Remix - The only remix of "Dead" on this package takes the original Yizzy vocal and dumps it in the bin. The house-y production is pretty fine, some metallic ideas and deep house vibes, but there was no need to completely ruin what was a perfectly good rap vocal. (49/100)

  27. Green Crack - Riot Ten Remix - Riot Ten immediately kills everything the original track stood for, removing all the vocal effects and obliterating the main lead with an overly heavy dubstep sustain. All the atmospheres in the verse are gone. I do wish there were more remixes of "Green Crack" than this, because this does not satisfy me. (48/100)

  28. Distance - Macky Gee Remix - The predrop was so cool with big kicks and a bit of a groove to it, but that goofy ass lead in the drops is not it. Almost a gold remix that flips over and eats its own tail. (46/100)
