Beginner-friendly? probably not but goofy enough so maybe
The long-awaited debut Eliminate record is finally here, and in true Eliminate fashion, it comes with the most bizarre branding possible. Oh, and the wackiest music possible.
I say 'music' because I'm not entirely certain how to categorise "Get Off The Internet". Primarily a bass producer, Eliminate has dabbled in the likes of dubstep, trap, and house, but "Get Off The Internet" extends that range all the way out to completely alternative genres like hyperpop. A diverse record, to be sure, but one that's charged with Eliminate's classic goofy style to result in some genuinely stupid tracks with plenty of shock factor and a surprising amount of clean production to match it. "Get Off The Internet" is bold and confident and, ironically, imbued with the spirit of the Internet itself; spontaneous and a little silly, but also quite serious, and ultimately rather well-balanced in its messaging — have a bunch of fun and power through the bad bits, all framed by the title track's hyperpop hook "hey stupid idiot, get off of the Internet". Eliminate comes on strong with the repeating samples, but somehow, they don't feel irritating or repetitive at all, instead complementing the production choices uncannily well to bolster its intensity or emotion. The technical aspects don't suffer from the goofiness "Get Off The Internet" poses either, and Eliminate's synthwork proves to be a particular highlight of his mixdowns, bright and commanding. Strong mixdowns, innovative dynamic production and constant switchups are the technical edge to this project, but its sheer nonsensical energy still spearheads it and envelops it completely — and that's what makes "Get Off The Internet" such an endearing album. It's clear that Eliminate had a blast producing these tracks, and yet some measure of emotional sincerity is still able to shine through, perhaps in tracks like "Dawn" or "Playing With Fire", allowing this project to not only exhibit genre diversity, but also tonal diversity, whilst still keeping that chaotical, ridiculous wrapper fitted snugly around it. Eliminate's debut is an incredibly strong performance that perfectly conveys what he wants to convey, and still feels very confident in itself in the process.
Eliminate sure did strike gold here, but honestly, I found myself saving less tracks that I thought I would. A couple of the cuts off this project just aren't really my jam, and others didn't quite land on the same energy much of the tracklist stood out for. I think that is purely what takes "Get Off The Internet" down just a little bit, but make no mistake, this is a testament to Eliminate's abilities as not just a producer, but an artist.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
thinkaboutit | Very strong dynamic opener with heavy basslines and a ton of metallic-twinged vocal sampling | Intense |
Dawn | Spacious, grand, and rich, with meesh's vocals guiding the track but the production running off on its own | Standout |
EGOTRIP | Powerful tune with an insanely thick sub, a little more withdrawn and the sample is weird but cool track | Intense |
SMSOU | Good vocal performance from Frost Children and the house production is good too, but a couple of choices feel weird | Upbeat |
Get Off The Internet | Love the atmosphere on this one, great synthwork from Eliminate, and the hyperpop vocal fits the vibe | Fun |
heart.EXE | Mostly inoffensive production comparatively, strong second movement but mostly just a solid track | Intense |
comecloser | Goofy repeating vocal and goofy drop — fluttery, stuttery stuff, and it sounds oddly appealing | Standout |
MOREPWR | Absolute heater of a track with acidic basslines and chaotic sampling and basically the entire kitchen sink | Intense |
f_ck you | I am deeply sorry for anyone who was offended by this hilariously dumb track, I love it | Fun |
Playing With Fire | Probably the most *normal* track on this tracklist, but the vocal is clean and the production is equally clean | Standout |
Poison Oak | Not too huge on the vocals, especially the screamo, but not a bad track altogether, with Eliminate being a bit more withdrawn | Intense |
Waste My Time | Simple but effective tune with a wholesome repeating vocal sample and clean production | Upbeat |
happyending | Pretty nice outro with distorted elements, nothing much but provides good closure for the project | Structural |
